Industrial yeast cell developed by Tartu TUIT iGem team can be used also in wood industry. For this project Tartu TUIT (Estonia iGEM) got the GOLD medal at the biggest worldwide synthetic biology competition – iGEM!
The iGEM competition is an international competition where university/high school teams provide potential solutions to world problems using synthetic biology. It was first organized in 2003 by Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and since then has become the largest synthetic biology competition.
Science and Technology students of University of Tartu, who are the members of Tartu TUIT iGem team worked very hard the whole summer, spring and autumn to make it possible. From developing the idea, planning and making experiments, human practices, public engagement, to searching for sponsors and making team’s own website. While performing the project, students got invaluable experience, acquired practical, social and teamwork skills and accelerated their transition from students to young researchers.
THANK YOU, everyone, who contributed and made it possible, in particular, Mart Loog, LoogLab members, UT Institute of Technology and S&T students!
